Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed his appreciation for the recognition given to Cyberknife, a radiation oncology service at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Karachi by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), the United Kingdom.
The chief minister describes the achievement as a testament to the hard work and commitment of his government to the health sector and to the people of the province.
"The recognition is a source of immense pride for Sindh and Pakistan, underscoring the acknowledgment of the free cancer treatment facility provided through a public-private partnership between the Sindh government and the Patients Aid Foundation (PAF) at JPMC Karachi," said the CM.
Established in 1897 with the advent of X-ray radiation, the RCR is the largest organisation of its kind globally, representing radiologists and radiation oncologists.
On June 28, 2024, Dr Tariq Mahmood was honoured at Central Hall Westminster, London. His citations well recognised his contributions to radiology and radiation oncology in Pakistan.
Dr Mahmood, Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology at JPMC, becomes the first Pakistani and first Muslim worldwide to receive this prestigious award. He is also a recipient of the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for public service, an honorary rank of Surgeon Commander from the Chief of Naval Staff, and honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Edinburgh for his contributions to medicine.
Dr Mahmood expressed gratitude to the CM and Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho for their support in acquiring a state-of-the-art Cyberknife S7 unit.
Since 2012, JPMC has been the sole centre that globally offers free Cyberknife and tomotherapy cancer treatments, benefiting patients from 15 countries and 167 cities in Pakistan, irrespective of religion or ethnicity. These treatments, which are costly elsewhere, are provided free of charge.
