Officials accused of supplying convict with recording device

Three warders suspended and others issued show cause notices over allowing an inmate access to a recording device at Gujarat District Jail.

Following the release of a viral video that showed an inmate of the Gujarat Jail being tortured, an inquiry was requested into the matter, which revealed that the video was staged. The inmate, who is a convicted murderer, recorded the video of himself being tortured to frame the jail attendants for misconduct and use it to blackmail them.

After the video went viral, the Punjab IG Prisons, Mian Farooq Nazir, took notice of it and ordered in inquiry. The investigation also revealed that several members of the jail administration were responsible for the prisoner getting his hands on a pen-like recording device which he had used to record the video.

As a result, three jail warders, Muhammad Nazir, Farrukh Amin and Adnan Khan were suspended for providing the recording device to the inmate. Two head warders and the Assistant Superintendent were issued show cause notices, while the Gujarat Jail Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent were sought explanations from.

Additionally, as per the findings of the inquiry, cases were registered against the prisoner, Zaheeruddin Babar, and his accomplice, fellow inmate, Akmal Hussain, on the statement of Assistant Superintendent in Police Station Civil Lines Gujarat.

The Punjab IG Prisons commented, “The prisoner Zaheeruddin possessed a very cunning and conspiratorial mind.

He has been shifted across eight different jails for violating jail rules on 18 different occasions.”
