Amandla Stenberg, known for her role in the upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte, has launched a musical counterstrike against the racism and homophobia she and the series have endured from conservative and bigoted critics.
Titled "Discourse," the song addresses the relentless online backlash Stenberg has faced throughout her career.
In the self-directed music video released on Juneteenth, Stenberg boldly confronts the wave of intolerance directed at her.
The song's lyrics directly challenge the misrepresentation and hate Stenberg has encountered, particularly referencing an interview clip from 2018 that resurfaced recently.
Critics manipulated her words from the interview to falsely depict her intentions, a tactic Stenberg criticizes vehemently in her song.
Stenberg also takes aim at the misuse of the term "woke" by critics who distort its original meaning. She asserts that the term, initially a symbol of progressive thought, has been co-opted to undermine and attack diverse viewpoints.
Moreover, the actor-turned-singer calls out media outlets for amplifying and sensationalizing the hateful rhetoric directed at her, accusing them of abandoning journalistic integrity for the sake of clicks and controversy.
"Discourse" marks another step in Stenberg's musical journey, showcasing her talent beyond acting. Previously, she has released singles such as "Wicked Animals" and "Be Mine," alongside her performances in the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen.
