The Acolyte’s Amandla Stenberg says “white people crying actually was the goal” of her previous film

The director of “The Acolyte” also expressed that Star Wars fans who oppose inclusivity were not genuine fans.

After Amandla Stenberg's recent accomplishments on "The Acolyte," a video clip of her interview on "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" has been circulating on the internet.

During the promotion of her film "The Hate U Give" in 2018, Noah asked Stenberg, “When people watch The Hate U Give, what do you want them to walk away with because I know everyone has a slightly different feeling.”

She replied, “Well, I mean, white people crying actually was the goal.” After Noah burst into laughter, Stenberg clarified, “was the goal.”

Echoing a similar sentiment, Leslye Headland, director of “The Acolyte” recently expressed to The New York Times that, in her view, Star Wars fans who oppose inclusivity were not genuine fans.

She expressed, “As a fan myself, I know how frustrating some ‘Star Wars’ storytelling in the past has been. I’ve felt it myself.”

In a subsequent text message, she affirmed, “I stand by my empathy for ‘Star Wars’ fans. But I want to be clear. Anyone who engages in bigotry, racism or hate speech … I don’t consider a fan.”

Producer Kathleen Kennedy echoed a similar sentiment, telling the outlet, “My belief is that storytelling does need to be representative of all people. That’s an easy decision for me.”

The official "Star Wars" X account has also stood by the statements made by its cast and crew, posting on their page: “Our Star Wars community is one of hope and inclusivity. We do not stand for bullying and racism. We support @KrystinaArielle.”
