'Six Degrees of Separation,' adapted from the Broadway play of the same name, saw Smith playing the role of Paul, a charismatic con artist who infiltrates the lives of an affluent couple on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, portrayed by Stockard Channing and Sutherland.

Confirming Sutherland’s death, CAA’s Missy Davy informed PEOPLE about the actor’s passing in Miami, noting that a private celebration of his life will be arranged by the family.

Throughout his illustrious career, Sutherland made significant contributions to the film industry, playing roles ranging from Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (2005) to the iconic President Snow in The Hunger Games series alongside Jennifer Lawrence.

His versatility and dedication earned him acclaim across decades of performances, including memorable roles in Ordinary People (1980) and MAS*H (1970).

Survived by five children, including actor Kiefer Sutherland, Sutherland’s legacy extends beyond his prolific acting career to his personal life, marked by marriages to Lois Hardwick and actress Francine Racette.

His son Kiefer shared a touching tribute on social media, describing his father as a fearless actor who lived a life dedicated to his craft.
