Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in an apparent attempt to placate his party’s former ally, who has decided to launch a movement against alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections.
Shehbaz, who visited Fazl’s residence, inquired after his wellbeing while appreciating the JUI-F chief’s religious services and “his continuous support for the peaceful struggle for the protection of democratic values.”
According to a brief statement, the PM also proposed the formation of a committee “to collaboratively address the prevailing political issues.”
During the meeting, the two leaders also discussed the proposed federal budget in detail.
The JUI-F chief was head of the opposition parties’ alliance—the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)—that ousted the PTI’s government in April 2022 through a vote of no confidence. His party was also part of the last PDM government that ruled from April 2022 to August 2023.
However, Fazl started breathing fire against the military establishment and the PML-N-led government after the February 8 general elections in which his party performed poorly. The JUI-F also grew closer to the PTI and other opposition parties, which are part of a newly formed political alliance.
