Dependence on foreign AI

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has become critical for countries and companies to stay competitive in today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape. However, Pakistan’s current reliance on foreign AI solutions raises concerns about economic and security vulnerabilities. It is imperative for Pakistan to develop its own AI capabilities in order to reduce dependence on foreign technologies and address the country’s specific needs and challenges.

Not only does Pakistan’s increasing dependency on foreign AI solutions incur higher costs, but it also puts critical infrastructure and systems under the control of foreign entities, potentially compromising economic and national security. To avoid these risks, Pakistan must prioritise the development of local AI capabilities to ensure sovereignty and self-sufficiency in the realm of advanced technologies. The absence of tailored AI solutions that address Pakistan’s linguistic, cultural and infrastructural nuances can lead to inefficiencies and biases. However, the development of local AI technologies can change this narrative. By designing AI systems with local laws and societal norms in mind, we can mitigate significant risks associated with data privacy and security, and ensure that AI advancements benefit all sections of our diverse population.

At the same time, we should not completely block foreign players from the market because this would kill competition and innovation. The government needs to develop a comprehensive national AI strategy that strikes a balance between leveraging foreign expertise and developing indigenous capabilities. Collaboration between the government, private sector and academic institutions can facilitate the creation of a conducive environment for AI research and innovation. By nurturing a robust ecosystem for AI development, Pakistan can empower its own technological capabilities and drive economic growth and competitiveness.
