Streaming giant Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming romantic comedy "A Family Affair”. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Joey King, Liza Koshy, and Kathy Bates.
The movie centers around Zara Ford (King), a young woman who discovers her single mother Brooke (Kidman) is involved in a steamy affair with her self-absorbed boss Chris Cole, played by Efron. This isn't the first time Efron and Kidman have shared the screen; they previously appeared together in "The Paperboy" (2012) and the upcoming "The Butler" (2024).
According to the trailer, the relationship between mother and daughter becomes strained as Brooke confesses to Zara, "I am starting to feel things that I never thought I would feel again, not since your father died". Zara's shocked reaction highlights the potential comedic conflict: "No! You did not just say that!"
King has become a familiar face on Netflix, having starred in the popular "Kissing Booth" trilogy.
Efron also has experience with the streaming service, appearing in the biographical crime drama "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" (2019) and his own reality show "Down to Earth" (2020).
Kidman's filmography with Netflix includes her role in the musical comedy "The Prom" (2020).
The film's release date was initially set for November 2023 but was pushed back to June 28, 2024, reportedly due to strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) [sources citing strikes can be found online].
"A Family Affair" is directed by Richard LaGravenese, with a screenplay written by Carrie Solomon. The producers are Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum, with Michelle Morrissey, Alyssa Altman, and Solomon serving as executive producers.
