King Charles set for first overseas trip post cancer diagnosis

Since being diagnosed with cancer, the King has been gradually undertaking his royal duties.

King Charles has revealed his inaugural overseas trip since disclosing cancer diagnosis will be to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings next month.

According to People Magazine, the 75-year-old British monarch will journey to Normandy, France, on June 6 accompanied by Queen Camilla to attend the Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion’s commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial, marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

This excursion will signify the King's first trip abroad since announcing his cancer diagnosis on Feb. 5. 

Following the public disclosure, King Charles reduced his public royal duties for several months during treatment but continued to work behind the scenes and hold small private audiences. 

He was frequently seen attending church services on weekends and even greeted well-wishers after attending Easter Sunday mass.

On April 30, the sovereign officially resumed public engagements by visiting a cancer hospital in London alongside Queen Camilla.

In recent weeks, despite ongoing treatment, the King has maintained a busy schedule, including a solo outing to meet staff and families of the Royal School of Military Engineering and appointing his heir, Prince William, to a military role.

Buckingham Palace announced on May 17 that the British royal family will undertake a series of outings related to the D-Day anniversary. 

On June 5, King Charles and Queen Camilla, accompanied by Prince William, will attend the UK's national commemorative event in Portsmouth.

Additionally, on June 6, the Prince of Wales, aged 41, will participate in two ceremonies: the Canadian commemorative service at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, hosted by the Government of Canada, and the international commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach in Saint Laurent sur Mer, alongside over 25 heads of state and veterans from across the globe, in honor of the historic anniversary.
