The project is still in the early stages of development, amid Sweeney's busy schedule.

Sony Pictures is moving quickly to capitalise on the success of their recent hit, "Anyone But You", by reuniting with star Sydney Sweeney for a Barbarella remake.

The studio is in talks with Edgar Wright to direct, with Jane Goldman and Honey Ross in negotiations to pen the script.

The project is still in the early stages of development, given Sweeney's busy schedule and Wright's commitment to his upcoming "The Running Man" reboot.

However, the involvement of Goldman and Ross, known for launching successful franchises like the rebooted X-Men and Kingsman series, demonstrates Sony's serious intentions for the film.

Wright has been interested in the project for some time, meeting with Sweeney after the initial announcement, but only recently committed to potentially directing.

The studio and Wright have a strong relationship dating back to "Baby Driver", and sources say the tone Sony and Sweeney are aiming for aligns with Wright's distinctive visual style and knack for fun, creative filmmaking.

Based on the 1968 cult classic, the new Barbarella will follow an astronaut from the 41st century on a mission to stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens the galaxy.

While the original film wasn't a box-office smash, it has gained a devoted following over the years.

This exciting development follows the massive success of Sweeney and Glen Powell's romcom, "Anyone But You", which grossed $210 million worldwide against a $30 million budget.
