RAWALPINDI:

Police have solved the murder mystery of a former government official Muhammad Afsar Mahmood, and arrested a suspect who had fled after committing the crime.

The suspect killed the officer in the limits of Rawat police station on May 7 and got away with Rs70,000 cash, a motorcycle, gold jewellery and a laptop.

The victim's son Abdullah Afsar, a resident of Defence Phase 8, told the police that his father Muhammad Afsar Mehmood was a former official of a government institution and lived at home while his mother taught at a college.

“On the day of the incident, my mother got home from college and knocked on the door. She called me when my father didn’t answer the door. She asked me to come home immediately. I had the house key and when I opened the door my father’s body was lying in the pool of blood and a lot of stuff including Rs70,000 cash, a laptop and my father’s phone were missing from the house. My father was shot in his head a few times,” Abdullah told the police.

Later, the police registered a case of the incident. SSP Operation Hafiz Kamran Asghar took notice of the incident while SSP Investigation Zunaira Azfar formed a team to solve the murder case.

The team obtained footage from closed-circuit TV cameras. In the footage, a young boy was seen with an elderly man in CCTV footage.

Police started searching for the accused with the help of CCTV footage. After committing the crime, the suspect kept moving from one place to another. Still, the police also kept searching for him and eventually arrested him from Multan and recovered some stolen goods from his possession.

During the initial investigation, the police found that the accused worked as a plumber. The accused was in touch with the deceased and used to ask him for money and other things. The accused will be produced in court for remand on Tuesday (today).
