Angry attendants: Liaquat National staff attacked

KARACHI:

Medical staff came under yet another attack on Tuesday, this time at Liaquat National Hospital after a patient’s attendants alleged that they were not receiving proper care.

After midnight, the relatives of a patient admitted to the intensive care unit damaged property, smashed windows and threatened and assaulted staff. The damage is estimated at Rs10,000, said the hospital administration. “The patient’s relatives had a certain point of view about the treatment, which was just not true,” said the director for administration, Brigadier (ret’d) Syed Naseem Ahmed. The hospital is paying for the repairs but intends to bill the relatives.

In the last week of August, the staff at Sobhraj Maternity Hospital were attacked. The men of a patient’s family manhandled doctors after a woman delivered a still-born child due to complications.

The Pakistan Medical Association has urged the government to pay some heed to legislation that addresses this kind of violence.
