RAWALPINDI:

Rawalpindi gears up for the upcoming Pakistan-New Zealand T20 cricket series with robust security measures in place. Ahead of the three-night matches and practice sessions at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium scheduled for April 18, 20, and 21, the Rawalpindi Police and City Traffic Police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure safety and order.

Over 5,500 police officers and personnel will be deployed to oversee security arrangements. The Rawalpindi police have meticulously planned security strategies, including the development of a comprehensive contingency plan to address any potential emergencies.

To facilitate the movement of teams, certain adjustments will be made to public transportation, including the suspension of the Metro bus service at specific times.

Notably, a helipad has been constructed at a designated location within the stadium premises to facilitate aerial operations. Hafiz Kamran Asghar, the Acting Chief Police Officer of Rawalpindi, will spearhead all command and control operations. The stadium area has been divided into zones, with officers stationed strategically both inside and around the venue. Rooftop surveillance and snipers stationed atop high-rise buildings further bolster security measures.

In addition to the police deployment, the City Traffic Police has devised a specialised traffic plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the matches. Temporary changes, including road closures and diversions, will be implemented under the supervision of Chief Traffic Officer Taimoor Khan and Senior Traffic Officer Munir Hashmi.

Furthermore, access to certain areas, such as the food street on Stadium Road, will be restricted until the conclusion of the matches. Dedicated parking areas with shuttle services will be provided for spectators, who will undergo thorough security checks before entering the venue through designated entry points.

A control room established at Shahbaz Sharif Sports Gymnasium will monitor all security arrangements around the clock.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the acting CPO reiterated the Rawalpindi police’s commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees, emphasising the importance of comprehensive security measures for both citizens and cricket enthusiasts alike.
