Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has mandated the relocation of the Ghanta Ghar fish market from the congested heart of the city to a more appropriate site. The decision aligns with the ongoing city beautification initiative.
A meeting convened, chaired by the Peshawar Commissioner, resolved to move the market to a suitable location outside the city limits. Its current placement within the congested area not only poses health risks but also exacerbates traffic congestion.
Local residents have long voiced grievances about the fish market’s presence within the old walled city, citing health hazards and frequent traffic disruptions. They have consistently urged both the district administration and provincial government to address the issue.
Furthermore, residents are also advocating for the relocation of the old vegetable and iron markets from the Reti bazaar. These markets, too, contribute to public inconvenience and disrupt the local community. With the city’s population growth, operating these markets within residential areas has become increasingly untenable.
They noted that in the past, when the city’s population was lower, these markets could coexist comfortably with residential areas, but that was no longer feasible.
