According to a report by The Indian Express, a film on the life and times of the legendary Madhubala has been given the green light, with Jasmeet K Reen, who has previously directed the acclaimed Darlings, set to take the reins.
The project is being overseen by Madhubala’s sister Madhur Brij Bhushan and Arvind Kumar Malviya as per the producers took to Instagram to announce their latest exciting venture.
“Exciting News! We’re thrilled to announce our upcoming film honoring the legendary Madhubala, the epitome of grace and talent. Get ready to delve into the timeless charm and captivating story of one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars. Stay tuned for updates,” read the caption.
Whilst the casting has not yet been confirmed, the film is expected to enter production this summer. The announcement from the production house followed reports that fashion designer Manish Malhotra was also mounting a film on Madhubala, with Kriti Sanon as the lead. However, Bhushan had previously dismissed speculation on any film in the works depicting her sister that did not have the seal of approval from the family. In October 2022, Bhushan had gone on record to state that there would be “only one” Madhubala biopic, and that it would be “backed by me and my team.”
“The idea is to not hurt anyone’s sentiments (through the said biopic) but we will showcase several unknown facets of Madhu Apa’s life which aren’t out in public,” stated Bhushan, according to a report by Pinkvilla. “The film shall also put a number of misnomers/inaccuracies about her life to rest.”
Born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi on February 14, 1933, Madhubala was one of 11 siblings and was forced to take up acting at a young age to support her family. With a career spanning twenty years from start to finish, Madhubala reigned Indian cinema for over a decade. In her heyday, she was one of the highest-paid actors in Indian cinema, and by the time of her death in 1969, she had appeared in over 60 films.
