PM&DC’s new accreditation standards

Guidelines for MBBS Curriculum, Competencies of a Medical Graduate and Medical House Job Competencies devised

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has prepared new upgraded drafts for accreditation standards.

In a statement, the PM&DC said that the accreditation standard drafts were prepared for Medical Colleges (Undergraduate), accreditation Standards for Teaching Hospitals (Undergraduate), Guidelines for MBBS Curriculum, Competencies of a Medical Graduate and Medical House Job Competencies, 2024.

The statement added that the PM&DC has been actively working on the upgradation of medical and dental standards for the past three months. APP

Arif Arifeen | 8 months ago | Reply Unfortunately PM DC has once again blatantly failed to include the most important stakeholders in the process of preparing the accreditation standards. Out of 184 medical and dental colleges 118 are in private and 66 in public sector. The accreditation standards made by PM DC were illogical and did not take into consideration the ground realities. Many subspcialities were added whose experts were largely non existent in the country and could not be brought in especially in the colleges situated in peripheral and far flung areas. Unnecessary expenses and facilities were added which had nothing to do with the quality and standards of medical or dental education. Pakistan Association of Private Medical Dental Institutions PAMI reviewed the entire document and suggested many changes to make it a balanced and practically applicable document. However PM DC ignored the PAMI s suggestions and notified its original document. Unfortunately PM DC s actions ignore the direction in which the current government wishes to take Pakistan. Such actions have nothing to do with the standards of medical or dental education and can only bring hardships to the colleges and the families of those working and studying in these institutions. This will also result in losses of revenues and further reduction in the already deficient number of doctors and dentists in the country. I therefore request that these so called accreditation standards be withdrawn immediately and a task force formed which includes the experts in medical education and members of PAMI from all regions of Pakistan to develop a practically sound document where every change is explained. Then adequate time should be given to prepare to meet these standards.
