KARACHI:

The University of Karachi (KU) administration has banned the activities of student organisations after a clash between two student bodies on the campus.

The clash took place on the first day of the session 2024 in the afternoon, causing fear among the new students who had come for an orientation ceremony. Two students were seriously injured in the clash, after which the university administration, by taking a swift action, has banned the activities of all student organisations in the campus. This ban has been imposed until further orders, the formal notification of which has been issued by Dr. Nausheen Raza, the students' advisor of the university.

The notification states that the activities of student groups affiliated to political parties will be banned till further orders and this step has been taken with the approval of the Vice Chancellor. It may be noted that Monday was the first day of session 2024 in KU. A total of 6,000 students have been given admission in various morning programmes, while the evening programme admissions are still going on.

On this occasion, an orientation ceremony was held in the morning in honour of new students, after which the students went to their respective departments for departmental introduction ceremonies. Evening programme students also came to the university in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, members of a student organisation entered the Mehmood Hussain Library and attacked some members of the other group, already present there, which made the situation tense throughout the campus.

According to the KU campus security advisor, Professor Salman, two students in the library were seriously injured in the attack, while some students tried to save their lives by hiding in the administration block, on which the members of a student organisation entered the administration building with sticks, but they failed to find the other students.

The mobile of the concerned police station reached the university with only three personnel, but due to lack of manpower, they failed to control any of the student organisations. However, a student organisation worker was detained by the police from the administration block.

While talking to The Express Tribune, Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mehmood Iraqi said, "We want to provide quality education to students in a peaceful environment and such a situation when clashes take place which disturb the peace, is not at all acceptable."
