In an effort to combat the escalating issue of human trafficking in Pakistan, FIA has launched the National Trafficking in Persons (TIP) hotline. People can register human trafficking-related complaints through the hotline. These complaints will then be directed to the respective police stations across Pakistan and victims will be referred to the relevant welfare departments for assistance. The hotline, a significant initiative in Pakistan’s history, was swiftly completed with support from the Australian High Commission through ILO.

Pakistan has grappled with the persistent issue of human trafficking, which particularly affects vulnerable groups such as women and children. These individuals face risks of abduction and subsequent trafficking leading to forced involvement in activities like sex trafficking, child labour, bonded labour, begging and forced marriages. While the hotline can be crucial in tracking traffickers, potentially identifying their gangs and mitigating their activities, it is essential to enhance awareness about the hotline among the most vulnerable communities. Traffickers frequently deceive victims and their families by promising them employment and other opportunities. Hence, there is a need for a simultaneous, tailored and targeted approach to educate people about the tactics used by human traffickers.

In 2021, the government initiated the National Action Plan to combat human trafficking. However, the FIA and other law enforcement agencies faced constraints due to a lack of resources and an absence of corroboration. Therefore, different stakeholders must collaborate. District and regional police and welfare departments are vital stakeholders and should undergo sensitisation and essential training to assist victims and ensure their safety effectively. Recent events have indicated that human trafficking poses a significant threat to millions of people across the country. Therefore, the FIA and all other stakeholders must ensure the hotline yields positive results and does not become another unsuccessful initiative.
