KARACHI:

District Election Commissioner (DEC) Masood Ahmad Qureshi has urged NADRA authorities to remove obstacles hindering the issuance of ID cards to people with disabilities and eunuchs, allowing them to exercise their right to vote.

While presiding over a meeting of the District Voters Education Committee at the Matiari District Election Commission office, DEC Qureshi has also asked the social welfare court to submit a list of registered NGOs, persons with disabilities, and transgender individuals in the district.

Moreover, he directed NADRA to launch the mobile service in the rural areas to expedite the issuance of ID cards to women. He expressed concern over the challenges citizens face due to overcrowding at NADRA centres and noted complaints regarding delays in women's ID cards issuance that need immediate resolution.

Notable attendees at the meeting included District Education Officer Amir Bakhsh Sohto, Additional Director of Social Welfare Zubaida Thahim, Assistant Director of NADRA Mirza Asif Baig, Election Officer Tanveer Ahmed, Asad Panhal, and others.

DEC Qureshi discussed conducting door-to-door campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of voting, particularly among women, men, workers, and youth. These awareness efforts will involve non-governmental organizations operating in the social welfare district, as well as the organization of awareness seminars.

DEC Qureshi instructed the committee members to guide people in the process of new voters registration and obtaining identity cards, with the aim of increasing voters participation in the upcoming general elections. He also mentioned that the ECP has extended the voters registration deadline until October 25, providing an opportunity for people to register.
