LAHORE:

Deliberating on the vision of party supremo Nawaz Sharif to steer the country out of the economic crises, PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday maintained that they would incentivise the industrialists and the business community while introducing reforms in the bureaucracy and the FBR.

The PML-N leader was speaking to the representatives of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Lahore.

Speaking on the occasion, Maryam, who is also the party’s chief organiser, stated that their agenda was to restore the economy and rid the country of debt and the people of inflation.

She stressed that Nawaz would implement the “charter of economy” and “rebuild institutions”.

The idea of charter of economy was initially proposed by PML-N leader and former finance minister Ishaq Dar in 2017 to "draw up a common economic vision for 2018-2023".

The intent behind the proposed charter was to plan a long-term economic policy with consensus to bring the country out of the debt trap, ensuring that no party does politicking in the name of economic issues and that no new government would scrap all the steps of the previous government so that consistency is maintained.

The PML-N chief organiser highlighted that they would introduce reforms in the bureaucracy and the FBR and remove the concerns of the business community by “ending the NAB’s vengeance”.

She vowed to incentivise the traders and the industrialists and encourage the mushrooming of small businesses.

Hailing the achievements of her father, she claimed that the agriculture sector was boosted during Nawaz’s regime, which resulted in increase in its production.

“Cultivators were given electricity on a discounted rate on agriculture tubewells and the textile industry was awarded with special incentives,” she said. “Nawaz Sharif is the name of an era of progress and development.”

The PML-N leader asserted that Nawaz brought an end to the power crisis and established LNG terminals. “He gave a new life to the industry by supplying gas and would resort to the same practice after coming back.”

She pledged to provide relief to all the classes including the youth, women, labourers, farmers and the industrialists, affirming that a plan for the “fastest development” of the IT, agriculture, minerals and other sectors had been prepared.

Nawaz had reached London in November 2019 in an air ambulance to seek medical treatment for multiple diseases after the Lahore High Court (LHC) allowed him to leave Pakistan.

He was allowed to go abroad for four weeks after his brother and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif submitted an undertaking in the court assuring the party supremo’s return once his health improved.

In the four years that transpired, Nawaz was declared a proclaimed offender in the Al Azizia Steel Mills and Avenfield graft cases for his continuous absence from proceedings.

The Supreme Court had disqualified Nawaz from holding public office in 2017 for not declaring a receivable salary.
