ISLAMABAD:

An expert on Saturday stressed the critical need for patients with diabetes to regularly monitor their blood sugar levels as it helps maintain their overall health and safeguard them from developing dental issues that may lead to more severe health complications.

A senior dental surgeon, Dr Awais Khan Rubbani, while talking to the media, stressed the significance of educating people about oral health issues, as he believes that a healthy smile carries considerable value in both social and professional spheres of life.

Dr Rubbani said dental infections in individuals with diabetes can have a detrimental impact on their overall blood sugar levels. A significant number of diabetic patients tend to neglect their oral health, despite the fact that they are especially vulnerable to toothaches and gum problems he said adding that these issues often arise due to poorly managed diabetes, ultimately resulting in elevated blood glucose levels.

In response to a question, he explained that diet plays a pivotal role in maintaining good health. Opting for a well-balanced diet and steering clear of sugary foods, he emphasized, can serve as a preventive measure against gum disease, tooth loss, and even mouth cancer.

If people eat highly acidic or sugary foods often, they will be more at risk of dental erosion than people who eat a healthy diet, he mentioned. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts are far better for your teeth and can help keep your mouth healthier for longer, he said adding that it's amazing the effects a well-balanced diet can have on your oral hygiene.

He further said regular check-ups are essential to maintain oral health.
