LAHORE:

In the ongoing countrywide crackdown against electricity theft on the orders of caretaker federal government, Punjab Police have registered at least 24,758 cases and arrested 15,031 suspects.

IGP Usman Anwar said that 1,193 cases were registered on Thursday only and 46 suspects arrested.

Over 238 cases registered in Lahore only. He added that 10,062 cases were under investigation while 10,451 had been challaned.

He said that they had issued directions to intensify the crackdown throughout the province.

With the coordination of different departments, indiscriminate action against private and commercial electricity consumers involved in theft was going on, Anwar said.

The supervisory officers must monitor the crackdown themselves, he added. Crackdown reports should be sent on regular basis, he said. He issued directions that strict legal action against the elements involved in causing loss to national assets should not be delayed at all.
