Raghav Chadha, who has been in the news recently due to his engagement with actor Parineeti Chopra in May 2023, was suspended from his Member of Parliament position in the Upper House of Parliament on Friday for an alleged breach of privileges. The President of the Aam Aadmi Party and elected MP was accused of breaching his privileges when he nominated fellow MPs S Phangnon Konyak, Narhari Amin and Sudhanshu Trivedi of BJP, M Thambidurai of AIADMK, and Sasmit Patra of BJD to be part of a select committee of the House.
The five MPs of the Rajya Sabha claimed that their names were given to the committee without their consent and, hence, Chadha’s move to nominate them was unethical and in violation of his privileges as a member of the Upper House of Parliament. The motion of suspension was made by Piyush Goyal, the Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry. He found Chadha’s conduct regarding this situation to be unprofessional and in violation of his office as an MP.
The politician will remain suspended from office until the committee of privileges investigates the matter, submits a report on it, and a decision is made accordingly. In his defence, Chadha had this to say: "Suppose I organise a birthday party and invite 10 people. Eight of them come, and two don't accept my invite. Instead, they charge me, 'How dare you invite us to your birthday?' This is what happened. I just invited them (MPs) to be part of the committee".
