The University of Chakwal has suspended the head of its law department over allegations of involvement in supplying drugs to students and constituted a committee to investigate the matter.
Vice Chancellor Muhammad Bilal Khan ordered the suspension of Dr Ghufran Ahmed. According to the university website, he is an assistant professor and head of the law department who did his PhD in law from the International Islamic University Islamabad.
He has been replaced as chairperson of the department and will remain suspended till the result of the inquiry, said sources privy to developments.
The action against the faculty member came in the wake of rising complaints about students of the university spotted at nearby parks consuming drugs.
University sources said that the faculty was worried about the use of crystal meth, colloquially known as ‘ice’, among students.
An international investigation suggested Dr Ahmed’s involvement in providing the contraband, said the source.
The university in Chakwal was established in January 2020, and is the only higher education institute in the city.
One person associated with the university said that drug consumption started on campus and spread elsewhere.
Groups of students – both males and females – have been routinely spotted gathered in the three parks – Allied Park, City Park and Committee Bagh – to engage in illicit activities.
A video has also been shared on social media in which university students are heard discussing the use of dangerous substances among their peers.
Currently, the authorities have not been involved with the university investigating the matter internally.
