Mayor to become ex-officio chairman of KDA

Sindh Cabinet approves amendments to Local Government Act to empower heads of local bodies, municipal authorities.

The Sindh Cabinet has approved major amendments to the Sindh Local Government Act to empower the heads of local bodies and municipal authorities.

As per the proposed amendment, the mayors and chairmen of the union councils Sindh will serve as chairpersons of their respective development authorities.

Subsequently, the mayor of Karachi will serve as ex-officio chairperson of the Karachi Development Authority, Malir Development Authority and Lyari Development Authority as well as Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, while CEOs of these bodies will also be chosen from the names recommended by the mayor.

The consultation and recommendations of the Karachi mayor will be taken into account for important positions, and one officer will be selected out of three proposed officers.

Similarly, the mayor of Hyderabad will acquire the authority of the ex-officio Chairman of Hyderabad Development Authority and the Sehwan Union Council chairman will be the ex-officio chairman of Sehwan Development Authority. All employees of the development authorities will fall under the council’s jurisdiction. The Sindh Cabinet has approved the amendments and legislation will soon be passed through the assembly.
