Environmentalists have expressed concern over the rapid deforestation in Pakistan, emphasising that it was not only negatively impacting the environment but also causing significant economic losses.
They believe tree plantation plays a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and was directly linked to the economic growth of any country.
The environmentalists were of the view that forests are essential for biodiversity conservation and act as a shield against disasters and climate change.
They stressed that woodlands are equally important for the economic well-being of the country, as wood production, processing, and the pulp and paper industries contribute significantly to the global gross domestic product.
Muhammad Irfan, a noted environmentalist and manager of the Food and Markets Programme at WWF-Pakistan, highlighted the direct link between deforestation and ecological degradation, which he identified as one of the greatest threats facing the world today.
He pointed out that deforestation has several negative impacts on the environment and the country's economy. Trees play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and their loss contributes to climate change.
Additionally, forests help regulate water flow, and their destruction can lead to water shortages.
Irfan urged every citizen to take responsibility for conservation and tree plantation.
He also called on the industrial sector to adopt modern methods and technologies to reduce gas emissions, implement proper waste management and disposal techniques, and improve water treatment. He suggested separating residential and industrial areas to minimise environmental pollution.
Irfan said increased afforestation can improve environmental conditions, ensure food security, generate employment opportunities, and boost income generation.
