Treatment of genetic diseases stressed

Measures for the treatment of children suffering from hereditary diseases were reviewed in a meeting held at the Jinnah Burn and Reconstructive Surgery Centre on Saturday.

Speaking during the meeting, Caretaker Minister Dr Javed Akram stressed the importance of protecting the society from genetic diseases.

It was decided that seminars in this regard would be organised in major government hospitals of Lahore soon, including the Children's Hospital.

The government of Punjab and Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine will support clinical research in the subject. Dr Akram said several research projects would be started in the Jinnah Burn Centre. He said there was also is an urgent need to promote the biotechnology industry in Pakistan.

More than 4,000 families affected by genetic diseases are registered in the centre.

Executive Director Dr Kamran Khalid and faculty members of the centre participated in the meeting.
