Vocational training of prisoners directed

Federal ombudsman says all stakeholders must pay special attention to problems of prison inmates

Federal Ombudsman Ejaz Ahmed Qureshi has ordered all stakeholders, including home, prison and related departments, to form a committee to look into the issues of prisoners, visit jails from time to time and meet the inmates.

He was addressing a high-level meeting regarding prison reforms in Balochistan province on Thursday.

Addressing the meeting, the federal ombudsman said that all stakeholders must pay special attention to the problems of prison inmates, especially children and women.

Provision of facilities to prisoners needs to be given full attention so that the prisons of the province can be adapted to modern requirements, he added.

He observed that vocational training centres should be established in prisons to provide training to inmates so that jails could be transformed into rehabilitation centres instead of confinement cells.
