RAWALPINDI:

The stench of garbage at the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) and Albayrak dumping site near Liaquat Bagh has made it difficult for motorists and commuters while creating a foul odour in the surrounding areas as well.

People crossing the Murree Road are most likely to inhale the foul-smelling air and filth particles.

Those living and working in Arya Mohallah, Gawalmandi, Raja Bazaar, Chamanzar, Mareer Chowk, Moti Mehal, College Road, China Market, Rawalpindi Press Club (RPC), Water and Sanitation Agency, Rawalpindi Development Authority, Punjab Horticulture Authority, Rescue 15, Sports Complex, and the National College of Arts have also complained of the smell emanating from the garbage dump.

Journalist Zaheer Sheikh said that despite repeated complaints and protests, the civic body concerned had not done anything to settle the issue. He said that there were fears that the garbage could become a breeding ground from where multiple diseases could emerge and spread.

The dump was once a park for women and children spread over two acres. It was constructed in 2005 at a cost of Rs4.5 million.
