Atif Aslam is back on Velo Sound Station 2.0 doing what he does best, breaking hearts with a heartbreak song. 'Mangan Aiyaan' celebrates this season’s direction of creating original music for diverse audiences.
With this song, the Velo Sound Station is not shying away from iconic sounds delivered in indigenous languages rendered in its signature edgy style, to move the needle on pop culture.
An original Atif Aslam track after a one-year hiatus, Mangan Aiyaan is the artists’ return to his forte of romantic serenades. Written and produced by Ahsan Pervaiz and composed by Atif Aslam who conceived the chorus specifically, the track is expressed in a traditional Pakistani dialect of Punjabi - a departure from the North American Hip Hop style Punjabi used widely in contemporary music.
The song is a multi-genre creation inspired by the festive wedding music of South Asia - and specifically has a cinematic playback quality, with the inclusion of R&B and folk elements.
It is about the last call for love, where the lover is asking the beloved to confirm their love, in which case the lover is ready to transform to the beloved’s way - or walk away altogether. The poetry tugs at the hearts that yearning for love, a glance, a chance; giving the listener all the feels with some compelling storytelling.
Co-directed by Zeeshan Parwez and Kamal Khan, the video plays out like a short love story, with Atif flexing his acting chops, as he pines for unrequited love. His love interest, played by Sona Rafiq, is icy cold in a white ensemble.
The two orbit around each other through corridors and rooms denoting the past, reflections and flashbacks. Tastefully done interiors add to the narrative and pull us into the romance.
A special nod to ‘The House of Art’ team for beautifully designing the Red Room, where the artists reminisce happier days in his relationship, to the surrealistically patterned Orange dream box where he meets his beloved.
The fashion game is on point as well, as the superstar takes on the stage in a blue overcoat, underlining the melancholy of his lyrics. However, flashback sequences reveal the artist in different wardrobes, a shimmering black jacket and a casual turtle neck to complement the mood.
The choreography by Zarmeena Yousuf, stays true to Velo Sounds Stations modernism, contemporising daandiyan sequence with a touch of neon. A flurry of flowers in visual effect ties up the whole visual narrative into a quintessential romantic story.
Mangan Aiyaan is a special offering by Atif Aslam for his massive fan following around the world known as the ‘Aadeez,’ but bets are on for it becoming the soundtrack to this year’s love tugs and tangles.
Velo Sound Station Season 2 has been produced under the supervision and mentorship of Rohail Hyatt. Three songs down, and each is diverse in its genre, visualisation, and approach.
We simply can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us.
