In a recent announcement, Twitter has introduced a new API tier called Twitter API Pro for startups which cost up to $5,000 per month.
Subscribers to this tier will get up to a million tweets a month and would be able to post 300,000 tweets per month, with access to the full archive search endpoint.
The company has had a mixed stance towards API, shuttering free access to API, then reverting back to their decision with a limit of 1,500 tweets per month for content provider bots. Recently in March they also announced their new pricing tiers, but the new tier is between the $100 basic tier and the $42,000 premium enterprise tier.

The Twitter API Pro is focused on startups that cannot afford to pay half a million per year, giving them a package of around $60,000 a year. The still-pricey tier might help some API bots, but can also make it difficult for developers to raise money through subscriptions or donations to sustain the service for a long time.
Twitter has yet to develop a solution for researchers and academicians, though it says its working on new solutions to serve the community.
