‘Pakistan is paving the way for AI revolution’

IT minister says AI Policy draft has been uploaded on ministry website for public feedback

ISLAMABAD:

Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Syed Aminul Haque, on Wednesday, affirmed the government’s commitment to positioning Pakistan as a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption, emphasising its crucial role in strengthening economies worldwide. In a move to bolster the economy, Haque said the government is working on a strategy to attract both foreign and domestic investment in AI.

Highlighting the global momentum in AI development, Haque revealed that at least 60 nations, including neighbouring India and Sri Lanka, have already implemented AI laws and policies since 2017. The minister also pointed out that Bangladesh’s draft AI policy has recently been opened for public feedback and consultation, illustrating the growing interest and recognition of AI’s potential across the region.

In line with these advancements, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has taken proactive steps by sharing a draft of the Artificial Intelligence Policy (AIP) on its official webpage. The ministry is actively seeking feedback and suggestions from a wide range of stakeholders, including public and private sector organisations, academia, civil society, and industry, to refine and finalise this comprehensive policy document.

The AIP is a pivotal milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward becoming a knowledge-based economy, as it sets forth a national strategy to establish an ecosystem conducive to AI adoption. By promoting responsible AI use, the policy aims to drive innovation and address unique user journeys in diverse market horizontals and industry verticals.
