The worse half: Ranbir Kapoor slammed for distasteful jibes at Alia Bhatt

The 'Wake Up Sid' star has passed numerous comments about his wife that have not sat well with fans

The year 2018 saw news reports burst forth regarding an unlikely, yet expected couple; Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt had begun dating. She was about 25 years old at the time, and her Brahmastra co-star was about 35 years old. The 10-year age difference irked only a few, but an overall sense of elation could be felt when the two tied the knot on 14 April 2022, and eventually had their daughter, Raha, last year in November.

Over the course of their relationship, however, the Sanju star has gone on to pass numerous comments that have rubbed one portion of the Bollywood fan base the wrong way. All these remarks revolve around Bhatt and seem to be in the same vein as perceivably mean-spirited jibes.

On bathroom habits

Whilst in conversation with Bollywood Bubble, the Saawariya star reportedly stated, “The one which I tolerate (about Alia) is sometimes - not sometimes - her bathroom habits of throwing the towel somewhere and her makeup remover somewhere. I have OCD, so whenever she comes out of the bathroom, I can see a total mess. So that’s what I tolerate about her.” The actor then added, “She has bad bathroom habits, but otherwise she is very organised.”

Airing dirty laundry

Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, the actor was asked about qualities in his wife that he tolerates, to which he responded, "What happens with her when she sleeps is that she starts moving diagonally and eventually your bed space becomes smaller and smaller. Her head is somewhere, her legs are somewhere, and eventually, I'm on the corner of the bed, really struggling with that."

When asked about the stars’ dependence on each other, Kapoor is quoted to have said to Navbharat Times, “I boast a lot that I am very independent and detached, but in reality, I am very dependent on her. I don’t go to the bathroom or eat if I don’t know where Alia is. It is very important for me to have her next to me. It doesn’t matter if we don’t do anything romantic or even talk but she should just sit next to me.” To this, the Student of the Year star added that her husband can’t do anything without her. “If I am not around, Ranbir leaves everything for the last minute,” she said.

Body shaming

The couple had gone live on social media while promoting Brahmastra, when the Highway star responded to a question by saying that they had not phailaoed (spread) the film yet. Kapoor took this as a cue to point at his wife’s pregnant belly, stating that someone had phailaoed instead. This prompted immediate backlash, which led to the Rockstar actor issuing an apology that seemed to border on justification and minimisation.

“Firstly, let me start with, I love my wife with everything that I have in my life. And what happened, I think it’s a joke that didn’t turn out to be funny. I really want to apologise if I have triggered anyone. It was not my intention. So, I want to say sorry to people who got offended or triggered. I spoke to Alia about it and she really laughed it off and she didn’t mind it.” He then went on to say that he has a “bad sense of humour” that sometimes falls flat.

Falling in love

When questioned about the process of falling in love with Bhatt, Kapoor stated in a live on YouTube, “I think when Shiva saw Isha, it was very easy for me because it was like Ranbir seeing Alia and he fell in love very naturally, like how I fell in love with her. It was love at first sight.”

However, interestingly, the opening episode of Koffee with Karan 7 saw Ranveer Singh reveal to the audience that Kapoor had joked about marrying Bhatt much earlier. The Barfi! star had visited the sets of Student of the Year, and had jokingly asked, “Should I marry her?” whilst in conversation with Karan Johar, which the ace director confirmed in the segment. She was 18 at the time, and he was around 28 (and in an alleged relationship with Katrina Kaif).

The no-lie rule

When asked by Kapil Sharma about whether or not he lies to his wife, the Raajneeti star said, “White lies are a part of our life scale. Sometimes, we lie, but it is for the other person’s benefit.” He went on to add, “I have not done anything wrong or controversial for many years that I need to hide or lie. I am trying to say that these days, I am very loyal to my wife.”

Looks but not the personality

When speaking about his daughter, Kapoor stated, “I told Alia I hope [Raha] looks like you. She’ll be a nicer-looking person if she looks like you. I just hope she has my personality and not your personality because I can’t have two.” The Bombay Velvet star further justified this by saying that while Alia is vivacious and has a loud personality, he wishes that Raha does not follow suit. “Two girls at home like this would be quite a daunting task for me. I hope Raha is a bit quieter and more demure like me so then we both can handle Alia,” said Kapoor, as reported by Hindustan Times.

As a consequence, and the resultant criticism that the actor has garnered, many have come to his defence, stating that a lot more is being read into the situation, with things being blown out of proportion.

However, there have also been those who have not taken too kindly to these comments and are making their anger known.
