ISLAMABAD:

The Rawalpindi Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has approved the cleaning of Nullah Leh and 15 other major rain drains to avoid urban flooding in the garrison city during the monsoon season.

According to sources, the Punjab government has released funds worth Rs30 million for the cleaning of the Nullah Leh, however, the civic agency had sought Rs40 million from the provincial government. They said the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and cantonment boards have also prepared a plan for cleaning 15 major rain drains in the city and the cantonments and have also sought a grant of Rs120 million.

Sources further said that WASA has decided to deepen and straighten the course of the drains to keep the citizens of Rawalpindi safe from floods this year and to ensure timely drainage of rainwater and sewage. The silt-cleaning work will be completed before the pre-monsoon rains that are expected to start on May 15, while the clean-up work will continue during the monsoon season as well.
