UNITED NATIONS:

Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar has said that the private sector should come up with innovative ideas and solutions to overcome the existing challenges and secure greater market penetration.

“Diversification of products while ensuring quality, affordability and competitiveness will help get a better market share for Pakistani products,” he said in a meeting with the leadership of American Apparel and Footwear Association and representatives of Pakistan’s leading businesses.

He spoke about the steps being taken to facilitate the business community and address their issues. The minister said that while Pakistan was keen to strengthen economic ties with the US, the private sector and the business community had a key role in realising that objective.

“Pakistan’s government is committed not only to facilitating the business community in every possible manner, but also putting in place policies that could meet requirements of the business community and the global market.”

Qamar encouraged US entrepreneurs to actively participate in Texpo exhibition, scheduled to be held at the end of May. Commerce Secretary Muhammad Sualeh Ahmed Faruqi gave a comprehensive briefing to participants of the meeting, where Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Masood Khan was also present.

The meeting discussed in detail matters relating to bilateral trade in cotton and textile with special focus on strengthening Pakistan-US trade relations, institutionalisation of mutual linkages, standardisation, traceability and visibility of products, and facilitation of the business community.

The meeting was informed that Pakistan’s government was setting up National Compliance Centre to address issues of Pakistani products’ compliance with international standards. The centre will be operational by June 30 this year.
