The film starring Chopra opposite Sam Heughan is a rom-com with a touch of heartache

The trailer for Priyanka Chopra's highly-anticipated romantic-comedy Love Again dropped on Tuesday. Directed by James C. Strouse, the film sees the Bollywood actor as Mira Ray opposite Sam Heughan as Rob Burns.

Based on a novel by Sofie Cramer, the film revolves around Chopra’s character, who, while grieving the loss of her fiancé, sends a series of romantic texts to his old phone number without realising it has been reassigned to Heughan’s character, Burns, who is a journalist.

Burns is taken aback by the vulnerability, love and honesty at display. And when he’s assigned to write a profile on megastar Celine Dion – playing herself in her first film role – he seeks her advice in figuring out how to meet Ray and win her over.

The trailer takes with Chopra’s Ray, who is a mess, refusing to find love again. It also sees her real-life husband, singer and actor Nick Jonas make a cameo in the film. The two share an awkward kiss as Ray decides to finally step out of her self-imposed isolation.

It goes on to show Burns, who appears emotionally unavailable at first, but quickly falls for Ray after he begins getting messages from a random number. Burns and Ray cross paths at an opera but he struggles to convey the truth about how he much he knows about her.

As time passes, the two become friends, lovers, and are seen exchanging a passionate kiss. However, things don’t seem to work out as planned and the trailer shows a variety of emotions translated through one-liners, tears, and confusion. The film is bound to have a happy ending considering it begins with a tragedy. But the mushy rom-com appears to offer so much else than a cheesy, coincidental love story.

Chopra’s portrayal of Ray is convincing and she conveys her dialogues with conviction, so much so, that we forget who she is. Heughan’s portrayal of Burns, however, is not as charming but the little chemistry it shares with Ray, judging from the three-minute clip, is captivating.

Love Again is slated to release on May 12, 2023. Based on the 2016 German film SMS fur Dich by Karoline Herfurth, the film was previously titled Text for You and It's All Coming Back to Me. It's backed by Screen Gems and distributed by Sony Pictures.
