App Review: Muzz - your own matchmaker

Muzz is digitalizing the rishta culture in our society with a platform where you can find a partner seeking marriage

Formerly known as Muzzmatch, this digital community platform embodies the rishta aunty in your community family, but with control in your grasp. The community provides a space for Muslim individuals to build a profile and find a partner for themselves based on their criteria.

The viral billboards that attracted attention in Pakistan for their quirky advertising, introduced us to a platform that is digitalizing the rishta and marriage culture in Pakistan, on one's own terms. Muzz was launched in 2014 by Pakistani Shehzad Younas, who first launched the app for Muslims abroad particularly in the UK, to help them find suitable partners for themselves.

“For a lot of Muslims we had horrible websites that were really expensive and awkward that no one liked, and all they had were rishta aunties, which even in the UK people aren’t a really big fan of,” says Shehzad. “A lot of families aren’t as well connected as they used to be and a lot of parents are struggling to find people for their own kids.”

Muzz is quite unlike a regular dating up, giving more control to users who sign up, especially women. The company is quite proud of the number of people they’ve banned from the site for improper behavior and not having the correct intentions to be a part of the Muzz community.

The entire application is dedicated to “empower you as a Muslim, and to find someone on your own terms, that equally respects your space, your traditions, your culture, and your family”.

Unlike dating apps like Tinder or Bumble, users have to fill out essential information that will help match them to the right partners, like religious sect, beliefs, perspectives of marriage, what they’re looking for in a partner, education, career and how they dress (Hijab, abaya, or none). Users can upload pictures to their profile, but if they intend to keep it private, they can use a pseudonym and turn on the modesty feature that blurs public profile photos.

Muzz users will be presented with profiles one by one individually, to evaluate, showcasing pictures, bio, and any other information that they have added to the profile. Some members even add their preferences and interests to help narrow down the search.

Moreover, the app is available in Urdu as well, for user convenience and ease.

The traditional swiping right and left feature has been imitated, with an option of liking a person, and if the feelings are mutual, the two members can begin texting on the app and can even join in on a family video call to formalize the relationship.

The app has a subscription service that unlocks important features, including the ability to view who liked your profile. The Gold subscription allows members to prioritize their search by adding preferences and what they are specifically looking for, along with the ability to chat instantly after visiting a profile, no ads, a weekly boost feature for your profile, etc.

More importantly, Gold members with VIP badges can filter out blurred profile pictures in search, and also keep chatting with people who’ve unmatched them.

While many prefer to use the free basic version and have been able to get reliable matches, the subscription provides an extra boost and a better experience of Muzz. Download the app here.
