Given that culture and heritage are accorded little importance in Pakistan, the Sindh government’s creation of an Endowment Fund for Archaeological Sites and Heritage Buildings sets a good precedent. Besides using the fund for the preservation, maintenance, and restoration of archaeological and historical sites, it will also support cultural talent, training and research.

As of 2022, six Pakistani sites had been inscribed on Unesco world heritage sites with another 26 on the tentative list. However, most people within the country have little to no awareness of these sites. The Makli Necropolis in Sindh is one of the largest in the world with many famous kings, queens, governors, saints, scholars and philosophers buried there in brick or stone monuments. Similarly, many other sites hold religious, cultural and historical importance and have survived through many centuries, but have failed to attract visitors in large numbers. Our failure to acknowledge and celebrate our culture and heritage has disconnected people, particularly the younger generations, from the country. Even at the global level, Pakistan is seldom recognised or represented for its rich archaeology and heritage. For decades, the country has been portrayed biasedly in the Western media and Pakistan’s overall reputation is often limited to its ongoing political events.

The Endowment Fund can help improve awareness and enhance archaeological and heritage sites to attract both local and foreign tourists. Increased tourism can also facilitate local populations and boost local industries. Thus, the Board of the Endowment Fund and the Sindh Culture Minister must ensure that the funds are allocated and utilised appropriately. Buildings that suffered damages in the floods last year should be repaired and restored. Other provincial governments must also take this as a sign to increase investments in archaeological and heritage sites.
