KARACHI:

Amid an alarming increase in street crimes and equally alarming police failure to control them, Karachiites have called for stopping the influx of illegal immigrants in the metropolitan city who, they believe, are behind the rising crime rate.

According to police records, a mugger who killed NED student Bilal Nasir while resisting a robbery on University Road has turned out to be an illegal Afghan immigrant. Another suspected robber, Amjad, who was killed in a police encounter in Korangi Industrial Area hailed from Larkana.

Similarly, the two suspected robbers who shot and injured two persons, including Bin Qasim police station SHO Idrees Bangash in Ahsanabad Town, Superhighway Industrial Area, have also turned out to be illegal Afghan immigrants.

Residents say that the entire stretch of Superhighway from Sohrab Goth to Kathore has become a safe haven for illegal Afghan immigrants and criminals. Residents have called upon the law enforcement agencies to conduct a search operation in the slums on both sides of Superhighway to bust these gangs of criminals.
