KARACHI:

The current law and order situation has made life miserable for the residents of this city, Mutahhida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Deputy Convenor Syed Waseem Akhtar said while addressing a press conference along with the members of the coordination committee.

"Can the rulers fathom the despair and grief of the parents who lift the body of their young son killed for the sake of a mobile phone worth a few thousand rupees," he said in a melancholy tone, adding that those in government are only enjoying their powers and do not care about this city.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah holds the portfolio of home ministry, Akhtar said demanding the CM to take notice of all these incidents.

He said the Sindh police have failed miserably in preventing the incidents of robbery and theft in Karachi - the city that nurtures the entire country, but yearns for peace and security.

The former mayor took a strong exception to highhandedness of non-locals who heartlessly loot and plunder in the city as if they are on a conquest mission. "People of Afghan origin are openly robbing citizens of Karachi and killing anyone who puts up slightest of resistance," he said.

"Who do we have for protection? The police? We are shocked that non-local cops were caught in robbery cases," the MQM-P leader said.

The irony of this deplorable security situation is that the police of the city urge the people to surrender before the robbers, rather than catching and locking up the culprits, Akhtar said.

Now the people of Karachi are asking whether we can keep licenced weapons for self-defence, he said.

The people are also asking what the Rangers are doing. Why did the Rangers not train the Sindh police which have accepted its failure to control crime.

Regarding the intelligence network of the police that is supposed to keep track of criminals, Akhtar said that police do not see thieves and robbers, but have complete information about MQM-P workers.

Akhtar said that in the presence of around 65,000 police and 13,000 Rangers in Karachi, the youths of the city are being killed mercilessly owing to indifference of the security personnel.

Let it be clear that they get their salary by the taxes paid by the parents of those who are killed. The law and order situation in other provinces is much better.
