KARACHI:

The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Karachi, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said that 54 people have been killed in the city in one month while women and children are also not safe.

While speaking to media persons on Saturday, Rehman criticised the Sindh government for "not ensuring security of citizens" and asked why the safe city project could not be implemented and why surveillance cameras could not be installed in the city.

Street crimes have been on the rise "due to police patronage," he claimed while urging that 80 per cent of police should be recruited from among local population. He regretted that the institutions where local people should be given jobs were being run by those not concerned with the city.

Rehman also criticised K-Electric, saying that the power utility's monthly bills were like bombs for consumers. He also said that SSGC was sending bills but was not supplying gas to Karachiites.

Rehman said that a Transparency International survey has declared police the most corrupt institution in the country. The PPP has been in power for 15 years and MQM for 35 years, but both could not launch any water project in the city for the past 17 years.

"The city is getting water only through a tanker mafia," he said, adding that those protesting against water shortage in Khokhrapar were tortured by police.

He also criticised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and said that the former ruling party made announcements after announcements but did not give anything to Karachi.
