Business leaders decry ‘import ban’

Governor stresses continuity of policies, charter of economy

Delegations of the Pakistan Plastic Traders Association and the Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey Business Council called on Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman to highlighted challenges being faced by the business and trader community on Wednesday.

The governor said on the occasion that it was very important to provide a favourable environment to the business community to strengthen the country’s economy and continuity of policies was very important in this regard. He said all political parties should work out a charter of economy with consensus.

Pakistan Plastic Traders Association Chairman Syed Azmat Ali Shah said the government had imposed an undeclared ban on the import of luxury as well as non-luxury items, adding that due to the ban, raw material and machinery parts had become unavailable.

He said non-luxury items, raw material and machinery parts were very important in the business sector and played an important role in economic development.

The governor praised the role of the business community in philanthropy along with its economic contribution. "Till date, I have not met any businessman who does not do public welfare work," he added.

The Pakistan Plastic Traders Association chairman said the industrialists and traders were facing uncertainty and anxiety. The economy of the country can be boosted by solving the problems of the business community, he added.

The association’s president Mian Haroon said favourable conditions for business and removal of the import ban could help increase foreign exchange.

The governor assured the business leaders that he would play his role in solving the problems of industrialists and traders on a priority basis. Pakistan Azerbaijan Turkey Business Council leaders Arshad Muhammad and Farhan Salim were also present.
