Police have detained for questioning a few suspects merely on the basis of their wild guess in connection with the sickening gangrape of a flood-affected orphan girl in the posh Clifton area of the city, The Express Tribune has learnt.
The random arrests were made because police could not determine where the suspected rapists had taken the 10-year-old girl after kidnapping her from outside a shopping mall.
The victim's health condition is stable but police have not been able to record her detailed statement which they now say would be done by Tuesday night.
The heartless incident took place on Sunday morning when the 10-year-old orphan girl was abducted by the two beastly perverts from Clifton Block 4 within the jurisdiction of Boat Basin police station who took her to a location and allegedly subjected her to gang-rape.
The Boat Basin police registered a case under sections 34/376 and 364A of the Pakistan Penal Code against two suspects on the complaint of the victim's mother.
Doctors have confirmed on the basis of a medical examination of the victim that she has been abused.
However despite the passage of two days, police are still clueless where the victim had been taken to by her tormentors after abducting her from Clifton Block 4.
They have detained some people on the basis of their wild guess from where the 10-year-old was kidnapped.
Zahida Parveen, SP Investigation South, told The Express Tribune that police have taken some people into custody including watchmen, parking assistants, and security guards for questioning.
However, she admitted that they have not been able to trace the main suspects or their accomplices.
"DNA samples collected during the medical examination of the victim have been sent to the lab for test. We are waiting for the report," SP Parveen said.
"The victim's condition is better but her detailed statement has not been recorded yet," she added.
She said that they have also acquired video footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the area in order to reach to the suspects.
Police surgeon Dr Samia said that DNA samples have been sent to the University of Karachi laboratory and it might take five to six days to prepare the report.
"We would be able to give you further details once the DNA test report comes in," Dr Samia said.
The investigating officer has quizzed the victim who is currently under treatment at a hospital.
According to her, the suspects lured her into getting into a whitecolour car promising to buy her food and ration from a grocery store.
However, she has been giving conflicting statements about the number of her tormentors because she is scared.
Police said they would record a complete statement of the victim by Tuesday night.
