A particular neighbourhood in the upscale Clifton locality has become the target of muggers due to broken street lights.
Darkness in street 21 of Clifton Block 2 helps robbers target their prey easily, a woman said in an application to the police chief of the South district. Having lost a brother in a mugging incident, she said she did not want other women bear this pain.
"People become an easy target for street criminals on Clifton Block 2 Street 21 due to darkness though more than 100 power poles are located at a two-kilometre green belt park Street 31," Maimoona Hamdani, a resident of Clifton Block 2, wrote to South SSP Asad Raza.
The broken street lights have increased street crimes, she said, reminding that in 2012, her brother was killed during a robbery on the same street.
Maimoona said she lost her brother to street crime and did not want anybody else to lose a sibling or a loved one. "As responsible citizens, we all have to play our role against the increase in street crime incidents," she added. She further said that because there are no street lights, looting has become common, and the area has become a hotspot for street crime. Residents have also requested that the Union Council address the fact that there are no street lights in the area and that lighting is installed quickly, but they have neglected this solemn issue.
