A new grading system is being considered for matriculation and intermediate examination results across Pakistan.
The present six-point grading system has A1, A, B, C, D, and E grades which would be replaced with nine-point grades that is A+, A, A- and B+, B, B-, followed by C, D and E, Sindh Technical Board Chairman Masroor Sheikh said.
The matter had come up in the 171st meeting of the sub-committee of the Inter-Boards Chairmen Committee (IBCC) a representative body of the heads of the educational boards of Pakistan, he said talking to The Express Trbune.
Two meetings of the IBCC Steering Committee have also been held to shift from six-point grading to nine-point grading.
“A meeting of IBCC is expected to formally decide on the new grading system,” he said.
Chairmen of 32 education boards from across the country, directors of curriculum wings and chairmen of textbook boards of four provinces, besides head of Allama Iqbal Open University will also participate in this meeting.
A total of 42 members of IBCC will come together for the 174th meeting of the committee to consult and approve the new grading system, Sheikh said.
Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) Chairman Prof Dr. Saeeduddin said the new grading system will benefit students.
“A student who passes with 90% marks gets an A1 grade and so does the student who passes with 81% marks. Breaking down in A+, A and A- is being considered to increase the grades according to the hard work of the students,” he said, adding, it will increase the competition among the students and also the quality of education.
