RAWALPINDI:

The ongoing anti-dengue campaigns have failed to contain the spread of the dengue virus as more suspected patients of the vector-borne disease landed in hospitals of the garrison city during the last 24 hours.

Health officials said that 77 new dengue-positive patients were admitted to the three major hospitals during the last 24 hours, taking the total toll of hospitalised patients to 249. They said that of the admitted patients, four were in critical condition.

According to health officials, 1,558 dengue virus cases have so far been reported in the Rawalpindi district.

They said that of these cases, as many as 56 dengue patients, who were admitted to various hospitals in Rawalpindi, hailed from Islamabad.

According to the health officials, currently, 111 patients were admitted to the Benazir Bhutto General Hospital, 71 to the Holy Family Hospital and 67 to the District Headquarters Hospital.

They said that a majority of the dengue patients hailed from Girja, Chak Jalal Deen and Dhamman Syedan union councils of Potohar Town. They also said that health teams have also intensified spray and fogging spray in dengue-affected areas.

In Rawalpindi, one dengue virus-affected patient has so far died this season.

Meanwhile, taking notice of the rising number of dengue cases in Cantonment areas, Cantonment Executive Officer Imran Gulzar has called a meeting on Tuesday to review the anti-dengue campaigns.

Officials of the district administration, the health department, sanitation departments and elected members of the Cantonment board will participate in the meeting to thrash out a new strategy to do away with the menace of the vector-borne disease.
