KARACHI:

The inauguration ceremony of the DHA Storm Water Drain Project was held in the city at Capt Raja Farhan Shaheed Park on Friday.

Defence Housing Authority Administrator Brig Rai Asim Mustafa was the chief guest of the event while sportsmen Jahangir Khan and Moin Khan also participated in the event.

Brig Asim said that the sufferings of the residents were taken into consideration during the planning of the project. He informed that helplines and teams have been formed, which will be available at all times to resolve any reported grievances.

According to the DHA spokesperson, the project will be helpful for the timely drainage of rainwater in the city. The project will be completed in about one and a half years.

Under the project, a 1.5 metre deep and 2.5-metre wide drain will be constructed under the 74km-long road. He said the drain project will completely solve the problem of rainwater stagnation at Khayaban-e-Nishat, Khayaban-e-Bukhari, Phase IV and other areas.

He said that the project is four times larger than the previous drainage system due to the special technical assistance of NESPak and NLC. "While preparing the design of the project, 100 years of rainfall data has been taken into consideration," the spokesperson said. He said that the water from the stormwater drain will fall into the sea and Mehmoodabad nullah.

DHA residents participating in the event expressed their satisfaction with the project. They said that in the past years, all their reservations regarding the system have disappeared.

The residents said that when the stormwater drainage project is fully operational, they will hopefully get relief from clogged water in their residential areas.
