The increasing use of motorbikes is not only creating health issues by discouraging walking, but also cause nearly 90 percent of road accidents in South Punjab. This was stated by District Emergency Officer Dr Kaleem Ullah, while talking to the media on Tuesday.
Developed countries are promoting bicycles and walking to maintain a healthy society, however in our country, the motorbike addiction is on rise almost in all age groups, Dr Kaleem Ullah said. The two-wheelers are also a contributor to road accident figures. He lamented the improper use of motorcycles as well as underage riders on the roads, as they did not understand traffic rules.
According to the District Emergency Officer, there were about 20 reasons behind motorcycle accidents.
The motorcyclists not only risked their own lives, but also those of others.
According to control room sources, there are an average 20,000 motorcycle accidents annually across the district. Dr Kaleem Ullah stated that there should be an official motorcycle driving school in the city.
