The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of the country, warning of urban flooding in several major cities and flash flooding in numerous areas of Balochistan.
"A well-marked low pressure (LPA) located over east Rajasthan (India) is likely to move northwest direction and approach Sindh tonight," PMD spokesperson said in a statement.
Due to this strong weather system, he added, monsoon currents are penetrating in the southern and upper parts of the country. "More rain-wind/thundershower (with scattered heavy to very heavy falls) is expected in Sindh, South Punjab, south and northeastern Balochistan from August 23 and 26 with occasional gaps," the statement said.

The spokesperson said that rains with winds and thundershowers are expected in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan from August 23 to 26.
Warning about the possible impacts, PMD stated that the heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Hyderabad, Tando Jam, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Naushahro Feroz, Larkana, Jaccobabad and Sukkur from August 24 to 25.
"Flash flooding is expected in Qilla Saifullah, Quetta, Ziarat, Harnai, Pishin, Loralai, Barkhan, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Jhal Magsi, Mosa Khel, Zhob, Sherani, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Bolan, Awaran, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella and hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan from 24th to 26th August."
It also said that heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, Lahore and Gujranwala on August 24 and 25.

"Flash flooding is expected in local nullahs of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Dir, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Kashmir from 24th to 26th August," it added.
The PMD statement said that rainfall may trigger landslides in Kashmir, hilly areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Chillas, Diamir, Gilgit, Hunza, Astore, Ghizer and Skardu during the forecast period. It advised the travellers and tourists to remain cautious during the forecast period.
"All concerned authorities are advised to remain alert and to take necessary precautionary measure during the forecast period," it further stated.
