KARACHI:

Pakistan’s two leading car assemblers, Toyota and Suzuki, plan partial plant shutdowns next month due to unavailability of raw material amid import restrictions and exchange rate volatility, officials at both companies said on Wednesday.

The government in recent weeks has attempted to curb imports in the face of fast depleting foreign reserves, a declining currency and a widening current account deficit, because of which the rupee has lost over 20% of its value this year.

The move has had a cascading effect on industries that rely on imports to complete finished goods as they say the central bank has delayed the clearance of letters of credit with banks facing a shortage of dollars, affecting their ability to import materials.

“There will be 10 working days next month, only if central bank allows us to open letter of credit based on the quota they promised,” Ali Asghar Jamali, chief executive at Indus Motor Company Ltd (INDM.PSX) which assembles Toyota vehicles in Pakistan, told Reuters.

He said the company was offering refunds to customers facing delays and markups on their payments, with deliveries likely to be delayed by at least three months and prices to be revised as the country does not have dollars available.

Reserves with the central bank have fallen to as low as $9.3 billion, enough to cover less than two months of imports. The current account deficit for the last financial year touched 5% of GDP with imports hitting record highs.

Pak Suzuki, which assembles Suzuki vehicles locally, echoed the sentiment, citing the central bank's new mechanism for prior approval for imports.

"Restrictions had adversely impacted clearance of import consignments from ports," the head of public relations for Pak Suzuki Motors, Shafiq A. Shaikh, said.

He said the unavailability of materials may result in a plant shutdown in August.

"If the same situation continues, then from August 2022 we have big problems," Shaikh said.

State Bank of Pakistan did not respond to requests for comment.

The sale of locally assembled cars in Pakistan surged by around 50% from July 2021 to May 2022 compared with the same period of the previous year, according to the data of Pakistan Automotive Manufactures Association.

test1 | 2 years ago | Reply I want every single assembly plant in our country to be closed so that our local manufacturing is given a full 100 chance to thrive in a market of 230 million people. I want manufacturing not shitty assembling plants. Also there is zero investment in these assembly plants but they have control over your hard earned forex they are very quick to take your dollars out. Just kill these multinational company assembly plants which don t invest a single dollar but took billion of dollars out of our country.
test | 2 years ago | Reply Yeah all elite is just corrupt as usual. They should know perhaps our people must know that these factory owners are fooling i mean what local manufacturing plants has to do with forex. Tell me what a local manufacturing plant has even to do with dollars simply because they import every single thing from abroad only then they need dollars to feed themselves. They will give you lolipop in return so much money and dumb cars. They are not even manufactured in our country Pakistan also there parts are not manufactured in Pakistan too. We are not manufacturing anything because if local manufacturing plants use local materials to make products zero forex is required no single dollar will be used in manufacturing. Write my words forex has a lot to do with corruption and lack of exports and the feeding of luxury lifestyle of elite through import based industry which suck our dollars. I repeat what you are seeing today in our country is artificial and also taking loans and cutting no imports proves that politically motivated but don t forget about debt your govt has taken a lot lot of debt. Shit Shit and Shit they are throwing at a common man unless you come out and snatch all the wealth from these elites which are corrupt thorougly take their money. Every single party is corrupt simply because all parties are made up of elites when ever a party win or is near winning they will move to that party also whether they are in govt or not in govt they control everything literally every single dollar and rupee that belongs to a common man. Every single govt that comes feel pride in taking more and more loans and following the western agenda and they will tell people openly during gatherings about their performances of taking loans and people just suck because even don t what they are saying. So take loans and loans and suck dollars through import based economy and feed your luxury lifestyle.
